USB serial not working

I figured out the problem. For some reason I can't use pinmode on gpio40. This causes USB serial to stop working!?? To fix, hold button s2(boot) the press s1 (reset). Then download firmware, then press s1 (reset) to flash.
I really can't figure out how to use this board without the schematic. |
