As it turns out the web interface timer parameter settings page just writes a script in the same format as the script in the instructions Admin linked above. I watched the web console and saw the script the timer parameter setting page had written, then when it was time for it run nothing happened. No relays get switched on, no message appears in the console to indicate anything has been switched . I also tried a bunch of my own scripts and examples from the docs. Nothing gets switched either way.
I could see in the console that my system time was synchonised to the same NTP time my PC is using, so that can't be the problem. Either there is another setting somewhere that's poorly documented or the firmware has a problem that prevents the timer from triggering anything. I tried it on 4 different ESP boards and none of them can switch a relay proven to be working correctly.
